M&A Counsel
Key requirements
The client was looking for a 4–6 PQE private equity M&A lawyer to strengthen deal capacity as the firm deploys capital from its new fund. The business executes large, complex transactions, often in the multi-billion range. The role required a lawyer with strong technical judgement who can work effectively with investment teams and external counsel to navigate sophisticated deal structures and deliver clear, practical advice.
Constraints or sensitivities
The search focused on lawyers willing to operate beyond a traditional M&A remit. The role required exposure to regulatory matters, compliance, and elements of fund formation, alongside transaction work. Equally important was cultural fit. The firm needed someone who could integrate into a small, high-performing team and work closely with investment professionals across the business.
Market mapping and intelligence
We mapped the M&A and Private Equity teams across the Magic Circle and Silver Circle firms to identify lawyers with the right technical background and deal exposure. The mandate generated strong interest in the market, helped by the clarity with which we positioned the opportunity and the quality of the client. This resulted in a high-calibre shortlist. Several candidates would have been capable of performing strongly in the role, giving the client genuine choice in the final selection.
Candidate evaluation process.
The evaluation process was thorough and structured. Candidates completed a case study and went through detailed interviews built around clear selection criteria. March conducted its own due diligence, assessing judgement, technical capability, and how each candidate would operate within the firm. Final decisions were supported by extensive referencing to validate track record, working style, and credibility with partners and stakeholders.
